Johnston's of Elgin Evolve Our Impact
Johnston's of Elgin’s unique location in the Scottish mountains allows them to utilise the naturally flowing Scottish water to produce super soft cashmere using comparatively fewer chemicals. Whilst their processes require heavily heating the water, they are involved in efforts to recapture energy from the hot water as part of their journey to use 100% sustainable energy from 2019. As one of the founders of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, Johnstons of Elgin is committed to encouraging the adoption of responsible production practices that minimise environmental impact, safeguard herder livelihoods, and meet high animal welfare standards. The Alliance achieves this through education programmes focusing on traditional herding techniques in Mongolia, a country that’s been hit hard by the effects of climate change. As well as encouraging people to buy and use natural fibres which biodegrade in the ocean rather than becoming microplastics. Reducing chemical usage, using sustainable energy, respecting other entities, and recycling materials is essential in the fight against climate change. Through these actions, we can preserve biodiversity and also reduce the amount of waste we produce, which cuts carbon and allows other entities to assist us in carbon reduction through ecosystem services.
